The Short Answer: 14 Twelve-Ounce Pours
A standard 5-liter mini keg holds 169 ounces of beer. Divide that by 12 ounces and you get approximately 14 pours. That's roughly equivalent to a 12-pack of standard domestic beer.
But — and this is important — that's not the full picture. Pour size varies. Beer style matters. And how long your event runs changes everything.
| Pour Size | Number of Pours per 5L |
|---|---|
| 8 oz (taster/pint glass) | 21 |
| 12 oz (standard can) | 14 |
| 16 oz (pint at the bar) | 10–11 |
| 20 oz (large pint) | 8–9 |
For most social drinking, 12 ounces is the right reference point. It's what you'd pour in a standard pint glass to the line — not a full brim-to-brim pint, which is 16 ounces.

Party Planning Math: How to Actually Use This
Solo Night / Couple (2 people)
2 people, 3 hours, 2 drinks/hour each = 12 drinks. 1 five-liter keg covers this — you'll pour 14 twelve-ounce pours, leave a couple in the keg, and it's done before freshness drops. Good for: movie night, game day, dinner with friends.
Small Gathering (4–6 people)
5 people, 4 hours, 2 drinks/hour = 40 drinks. 3 five-liter kegs gives you 42 pours — enough for everyone, plus a backup if the conversation is good. Consider two different styles so you're not stuck with one IPA all night.
Party (8–15 people)
10 people, 4 hours, 2 drinks/hour = 80 drinks. 6 five-liter kegs = 84 pours. That's the right order. Add one extra keg if your guest list skews toward heavy drinkers or the event runs past 5 hours.
Big Event / Wedding (15–40 people)
25 people, 5 hours, 2 drinks/hour = 250 drinks. 18 five-liter kegs = 252 pours. Add 2–3 backup kegs. For weddings, consider 2–3 styles — you'll have craft beer lovers and domestic beer drinkers — give both options.
The formula: (guests × hours × drinks per person per hour) ÷ 14 = kegs needed
Round up. Running out of beer is the one mistake guests remember.

Why Beer Style Affects Your Order
ABV matters more than most planners think. A 4.5% session IPA and a 9% double IPA are poured in the same 12-ounce glass — but they hit differently. At 2 drinks per hour over 4 hours, someone drinking 9% beer is going to feel it in a way that someone drinking 4.5% won't.
Rule of thumb by event type:
- Daytime / outdoor / pool party: 4–5.5% session styles. People drink more and stay functional.
- Evening / dinner party: 5.5–7% styles. One or two drinks over a few hours, higher quality over quantity.
- Late night / party party: Anything goes. People are pacing themselves, ABV matters less than flavor.

The 5L vs. Other Keg Sizes: Context
Most people encounter mini kegs (5L) before larger commercial kegs. Here's the full picture:
| Keg Type | Ounces | 12oz Pours |
|---|---|---|
| Mini Keg (5L) | 169 oz | ~14 |
| Sixth Barrel (5.16 gal) | 661 oz | ~55 |
| Quarter Barrel (7.75 gal) | 992 oz | ~83 |
| Half Barrel (15.5 gal) | 1,984 oz | ~165 |
For most home events — 2 to 30 people — the 5-liter mini keg is the right size. You get fresh beer from craft breweries, it's manageable in a home fridge or under a counter, and you don't commit to 165 pours of the same IPA.
Storage Tips Before the Event
- Store mini kegs at 35–40°F (never above 50°F for extended periods)
- Let them sit upright for 30 minutes before tapping — this lets the sediment settle
- If you're using a CO2 tap, check the regulator pressure before the guests arrive. 10–12 PSI for most ales, 30 PSI for stouts.
